![]() ![]() What does happen is that you can't use the bookflow for the encounter, but specifically for this castle that is no loss: It is badly designed and requires a major suspension of disbelief that as soon as the first fighting starts, the other goblins don't round up the entire castle mobbing the party with all baddies swarming to the first room. More likely is that they just have an advantage because they take out a few baddies for free. The worst case scenario is that the players easily beat the entire encounter setting. All of these would be really cool for the players to experience, outsmarting the design of the dungeon and feeling strong for it. Why is it bad if the encounter is 'invalidated'? In your example you mention stealth kills, spying around, striking from out of reach from enemies. Lot of usefull suggestions already, but I have a question for you: In retrospect for every problem I face in game I can come up with stuff that might work better but that's always after the session is over, which does me little good. I'm not sure if it's a me problem or a module problem (probably both to some degree) but it always feels nasty after I make the decision. This isn't the first time I've had to do this either. But I don't have that in game, so I'm left to either rule something that might break the encounters or just say no and leave the player feeling like they are arbitrarily limited in their feature. If I had 5 minutes between player actions to come up with something it would be easier. I'm supposed to reward creativity but instead I stifle it. Thinking about it afterwards, I feel bad about this and wish I could have done something better to not just invalidate his feature. ![]() But otherwise if he makes the jump, now he could potentially stealth around the entire castle, spying and potentially killing enemies that can't reach him. Instead I simply told him "the walls are too high for you to jump up to even on the max roll" and I could tell he was dissatisfied in the moment and I felt bad. Logically I would assume that means holes, unstable floor, etc but without guidance I don't feel confident making that call. The book gives little guidance on what features the castle has above the first floor, mostly reiterating that everything is crumbling and nothing lives up there. I didn't allow him to do this, because I felt it might break things. When investigating the outside of the castle, he wanted to use his Mirthful Leaps feature to jump up onto the crumbling castle walls. One of the players is a Satyr, who joined 2 sessions ago as a replacement for one player that dropped due to life. Last session they went to explore a certain crumbling castle.
